WumSkulls
Bringing a museum-like experience to your school!
Welcome
to WumSkulls
WumSkulls brings a museum-like experience to your school.
Using a collection of skulls, bones, teeth and other curiosities and my background in biology and education, I introduce some key concepts in biology as well as encouraging observational and analytical skills.
Allowing young children to get up close and personal with hands-on experience of a range of real animal skulls is a unique experience that your students will remember for ever!
"Crucial to science education is hands-on involvement:
showing, not just telling"
Sir Martin Rees,
Astronomer Royal and former President of the Royal Society

Aims...
- To provide an experiential, hands-on learning opportunity

- To develop observational and analytical skills by closely examining real-life specimens

- To introduce and illustrate the idea that structure and function are inextricably linked in biology

- To provide a different, unique and fun experience that the students will remember for a long time
A bit about me...
I am a secondary school biology teacher with almost 20 years’ experience

Currently I am teaching at a secondary school in central London

I strongly believe that we can only truly understand and appreciate the world around us by experiencing it.

The students are therefore encouraged to handle and scrutinise the skulls and to develop their own ideas and theories to explain the differences they notice.

It was fun and unique because there were animal skulls instead of a presentation which was expected
Year 6 student at Balivanich Primary School, Benbecula
I enjoyed looking at the skulls, guessing what animals they were and comparing the skulls to what they look like alive
Year 5 student at Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath, North Uist
It was a wonderful experience, learning about things and also having fun - educational and overall amazing
Year 5 student at City of London Summer School
What students have said...
The students enjoyed the experience of being allowed to handle a wide variety of skulls. Will had an excellent rapport with the students and we appreciated his knowledge and enthusiasm
Teacher at Balivanich Primary School, Benbecula
It was a much more interactive experience than we'd been able to provide. The session very much complemented the curriculum and information was well linked to previous learning
Teacher a Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath, North Uist
And what their teachers have said...
Linked to the curriculum....
The programme that I offer links directly to the National Curriculum for England and Wales and it also fits into the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence
For example the Year 3 and 4 units on digestion and nutrition and the Working Scientifically components
